Two haulage truck drivers are feared dead after their chrome-laden trucks plunged into the Ngezi River in Zvishavane early Tuesday morning.

According to witnesses, the two trucks, which were travelling from Mberengwa to Zvishavane, reportedly veered off the Ngezi Bridge while attempting to avoid a stationary vehicle that had broken down in the middle of the bridge.

Both trucks tumbled into the river below, submerging almost completely under the water.

Rescue teams from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), local authorities, and nearby mining companies rushed to the scene and are currently conducting recovery operations.

As of Tuesday afternoon, divers were still trying to locate the drivers, who are believed to have been trapped inside the wreckage.

Local residents gathered near the bridge, expressing concern over the growing number of accidents along the route, which is frequented by heavily loaded trucks ferrying minerals from Mberengwa's chrome-rich mines to Zvishavane.

Authorities have yet to release the names of the victims pending notification of their families.
