President Emmerson Mnangagwa has proclaimed December 20, 2025, as the date for the Nkulumane parliamentary by-election, following the death of the area's Member of Parliament, Hon. Desire Moyo, who died in a road accident on October 10, 2025.
According to the proclamation published on Thursday, the nomination court will sit on November 20, 2025, at the Magistrates' Court, Court 5, Tredgold Building in Bulawayo to receive nominations for candidates vying for the seat.
The by-election will be held in accordance with section 39(2) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13], which empowers the President to order a new election once a vacancy in Parliament has been officially declared.
In his proclamation, President Mnangagwa said he had been formally notified by the Speaker of Parliament on October 31, 2025, of the vacancy created by Moyo's death.
"Now, therefore, under and by virtue of the powers vested in the President as aforesaid, I do, by this proclamation, order new elections for the constituency of Nkulumane," reads part of the notice.
If a poll becomes necessary, it will be conducted on Saturday, December 20, 2025.
The Nkulumane seat, situated in Bulawayo, has historically been a stronghold of the opposition. The upcoming by-election is expected to attract significant political attention as parties position themselves ahead of the 2028 general elections.
