A tragic lightning strike in Chakari, Mashonaland West, has claimed the life of an 11-year-old child, while another juvenile from the same family survived after being struck during a thunderstorm.
The incident occurred at Grantley Mine compound as the two children, aged 11 and 9, were reportedly playing outside in the rain when a lightning bolt struck them.
Confirming the incident, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Inspector Ian Kohwera said the younger child later regained consciousness and managed to alert their parents.
"Two juveniles aged 11 and 9 from the same family were struck by lightning at Grantley Mine compound, Chakari, while playing outside when it was raining," said Inspector Kohwera.
"The nine-year-old victim later regained consciousness and advised their parents."
Police officers from ZRP Chakari attended the scene and conveyed the deceased's body to Kadoma General Hospital for post-mortem.
Inspector Kohwera urged members of the public to exercise caution during the rainy season to prevent similar tragedies.
"The public is advised to take precautionary measures during this impending rainy season to avoid loss of life due to lightning or drowning," he said.
Zimbabwe records several lightning-related deaths each year, particularly in rural and mining communities, where many residents are exposed during sudden storms.
