Mnangagwa promotes Emmanuel Matatu to full general

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), on Monday presented newly appointed ZDF Commander General Emmanuel Matatu with epaulettes bearing the insignia of a full General, formalising his promotion announced last month.

Speaking during a ceremony held at State House in Harare, President Mnangagwa urged Gen Matatu to remain vigilant and informed on global security trends. He described the new commander's elevation as a reflection of the confidence placed in his professionalism, leadership and long-standing military service.

"Your appointment to this apex position in our country's military establishment attests to the confidence I have in your vast experience and professionalism as a career soldier and decorated veteran of the liberation struggle," the President said.

He added that Gen Matatu's "loyalty, patriotism, honour and integrity" must continue to guide him as he upholds his oath to protect the Constitution and serve the nation.

"You take over the reins of an organisation with a renowned legacy and history of achievements as a progressive and resilient force in our region and beyond," President Mnangagwa said.

He noted that the ZDF's strong foundations had been built by successive commanders whose efforts had enabled Zimbabwe to play an effective role in peacekeeping, conflict prevention and regional security initiatives. However, he cautioned that the force now faces new and evolving security threats, including technological shifts in modern warfare and the persistent danger of terrorism.

In his acceptance remarks, Gen Matatu said he was humbled by the trust placed in him and pledged to uphold the standards set by those who came before him. He paid tribute to Vice President Retired General Constantino Chiwenga, former ZDF Commander Retired General Phillip Valerio Sibanda, and the late national hero Retired General Vitalis Zvinavashe for shaping the direction of the ZDF over the years.
