As Zimbabwe marked Unity Day, controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo announced a donation of US$2 million in cash and 20 brand-new 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series VXR vehicles to the country's top security services.

The donation, which Chivayo said was made under the "Cheer Funds", is directed to the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS). It is intended to support welfare initiatives for veterans, widows and orphans within the security services.

Chivayo made the announcement on his social media platforms, describing the contribution as a patriotic gesture meant to complement government efforts in supporting members of the security sector.

"This Day stands as a powerful reminder of our collective resolve to uphold peace and unity as Zimbabweans," Chivayo said. "It also reflects the enduring spirit of patriotism within the security services, especially the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, who have made Zimbabwe one of the most peaceful countries in the world."

He said the donation had been approved by President Emmerson Mnangagwa under the Cheer Fund framework.

According to Chivayo, the ZDF Commander's Christmas Cheer Fund will receive 10 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series VXR vehicles and US$1 million in cash. The ZRP Commissioner-General's Cheer Fund will receive five vehicles and US$500 000, while the ZPCS Commissioner-General's Cheer Fund will also receive five vehicles and US$500 000.

"The vehicles are intended to support welfare-focused and operational outreach programmes under the respective Cheer Funds," Chivayo said.

The announcement comes amid continued public scrutiny of Chivayo, whose high-profile donations, source of wealth and close ties to the state have frequently sparked debate and controversy.
