A 60-year-old man from Manningdale is counting his losses after armed robbers stormed his home in the early hours of New Year's Day, assaulting him with an axe and fleeing with over US$4,000 in cash.
The incident occurred around 2AM on Thursday, January 1, 2026, when the man was asleep in his bedroom. According to Bulawayo Metropolitan Province police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the victim heard suspicious noises outside and went to investigate, only to be confronted by two intruders inside the house.
"Fearing for his safety, he retreated to his bedroom and locked the door, but the attackers forced it open with an axe," said Insp. Msebele. She described the suspects as two males, both wearing blue work suits with yellow reflectors, with one armed with an axe and the other wielding an okapi knife.
During the assault, the complainant sustained a cut on his left finger and swelling to his feet. The robbers stole US$4,280 in cash, a Kabot King mobile phone, and an Open View decoder, before puncturing the tyres of a white Isuzu KB250 parked in the yard.
"The house was left in disarray, with clothes scattered everywhere. Police dogs were unable to pick up a scent at the scene," Insp. Msebele added.
The victim reported the robbery to ZRP Hillside around 3:30AM and was referred to United Bulawayo Hospitals, where he was reported stable.
The total value of stolen property is estimated at US$4,520. Police are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects as investigations continue.
