Three of the five people shot dead outside a tuck shop in Jeffsville, Atteridgeville, Pretoria, on Wednesday were brothers from Zimbabwe, police have confirmed.
The deceased Moyo brothers – Shein Moyo, Shelton Moyo, and Mike Nkala – were killed alongside two other Zimbabwean siblings. The attack occurred at around 13:15 outside a tuck shop at Block JV, according to Gauteng police.
Speaking to local media, the brothers' sister, Thandi Moyo, described the family's shock and grief. "I was on my way to a shop when I was told my siblings were among those shot dead. I felt so weak, I didn't expect it," she said. "We were told unknown people came and started shooting, then fled. We don't know the motive; we're still in shock."
The family described the deceased as hardworking young men who were not involved in crime. Their uncle, Lucky Mncube, said the family is struggling to cover costs to transport the bodies back to Zimbabwe for burial, estimating it would cost at least R20,000 per body.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as gunshots rang out. The tuck shop owner, who asked not to be named, said he and his customers fled in fear, returning only when it was safe. Residents of the area said they are living in fear and reluctant to provide details, citing concerns about possible connections to the attackers.
SAPS provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni confirmed that paramedics declared all five victims dead at the scene. He said police have deployed resources to investigate the incident. "It was reported that an unknown number of suspects approached the victims, who were standing outside the tuck shop, and shot at them without saying anything. The suspects then fled the scene," he said.
Authorities continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward as investigations into the motive and identity of the gunmen proceed.
