A 20-year-old man from Dzivarasekwa Extension has died in a suspected suicide after reportedly losing a substantial amount of money in an online gambling game popularly known as Kandege, or Aviator.
Ashley Patrick Magarira allegedly lost US$800 — money said to have been set aside for his brother's school fees — shortly before his death.
The incident has left the Dzivarasekwa Extension community reeling, with residents expressing alarm over the growing impact of gambling among young people.
A neighbour described the tragedy as a wake-up call.
"We are deeply concerned as a community when our children are choosing death because of the allure of quick money," he said.
"This gambling addiction is robbing our youths of their future.
"We need to come together to combat this menace and safeguard our children, our future, our heritage."
Ashley's body was taken to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
The incident has intensified calls for greater awareness around gambling addiction and stronger safeguards to protect young people from the risks associated with online betting platforms.
If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of self-harm, it is important to seek help from trusted family members, community leaders or qualified health professionals. Support is available, and no one has to face such challenges alone.
