A 28-year-old woman from Mvuma has escaped a custodial sentence after she poured boiling cooking oil on her husband in a fit of jealousy when she discovered a suspicious number on his cellphone.
Nyasha Chiwenga, a mother of two, was initially sentenced to 36 months' imprisonment for attempted murder but ultimately avoided jail after the court suspended the sentence on condition that she performs community service.
Chiwenga was convicted following a full trial before Gweru regional magistrate Sibongile Marondedze. The court heard that the violent incident occurred in the early hours of January 8, 2026, at Village 4A in Manyora, after a domestic dispute erupted between Chiwenga and her husband, Abel Ndazawani. The altercation was allegedly triggered by the discovery of a woman's contact number on Ndazawani's cellphone.
Prosecutor Monica Mungwena told the court that Chiwenga confronted her husband before going outside and returning with boiling cooking oil, which she poured over his face, head, chest and right arm, causing severe burns. Neighbours rushed Ndazawani to Chivhu General Hospital, where he received medical treatment.
In her defence, Chiwenga said she acted out of anger and alleged that her husband had infected her with HIV and AIDS, an allegation Ndazawani disputed during the trial.
In passing sentence, Magistrate Marondedze said the court had taken into account that Chiwenga was a first offender and the mother of two young children aged two and four. The court also noted that at the time of sentencing, she was unaware of the whereabouts of one of the children.
Of the 36-month sentence imposed, 12 months were suspended for five years, while the remaining 24 months were wholly suspended on condition that Chiwenga completes 630 hours of community service at Domboramwari Primary School in Mvuma.
While sparing her an effective prison term, the magistrate stressed that the offence was serious and could have resulted in fatal consequences, highlighting the continued prevalence of domestic violence cases in the country.
