Police have launched a manhunt for a bar manager who allegedly assaulted a patron during a violent altercation that later turned fatal at a sports bar in Chitungwiza.
The suspect, 22-year-old Tavimba Chikumba, is accused of attacking 35-year-old Andrew Mukwasi at Mauya Sports Bar in the St Mary's suburb, leaving him with severe head injuries that ultimately led to his death.
According to sources familiar with the incident, the confrontation reportedly began when Chikumba accused Mukwasi of interfering in an argument he was having with a man identified only as Slindo. Slindo had allegedly been barred from entering the establishment because of excessive drinking and disruptive behaviour.
Eyewitnesses said tensions quickly escalated when Chikumba confronted Mukwasi inside the bar.
In the ensuing altercation, Chikumba allegedly grabbed Mukwasi and forcibly ejected him through a back exit. During the incident, he is said to have pushed Mukwasi onto a hard pavement outside the premises.
Mukwasi reportedly sustained serious head injuries after hitting the ground during the fall.
He was rushed to Chitungwiza Central Hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Authorities have since opened a murder investigation and are appealing for information that could lead to Chikumba's arrest.
Confirming the case, Harare provincial police spokesperson Luckmore Chakanza said police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
"Police are looking into the circumstances surrounding this tragic case at a bar in Chitungwiza," said Insp Chakanza.
Chikumba is believed to be on the run, and police have urged members of the public with information on his whereabouts to come forward.
