Amnesty International has strongly condemned the arrest and detention of Constitution Defenders Forum (CDF) convener Tendai Biti, programmes director Morgan Ncube, journalist Fanuel Chinowaita and lawyer Nyasha Gerald Mukonyora in Mutare on Friday.

Mukonyora and Chinowaita were released without charge after several hours in custody, while Biti and Ncube were charged with contravening the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act for allegedly failing to notify police of a public meeting. The two are expected to appear in court for their initial hearing on Monday, 23 March 2026.

In a statement, Amnesty International demanded the immediate release of Biti and Ncube, saying they were peacefully exercising their constitutionally protected rights.

“Authorities must respect, protect and guarantee the freedom of assembly, expression and association,” the organisation said.
