Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has described President Emmerson Mnangagwa's development philosophy, "Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo," as the most effective framework for achieving inclusive and holistic national development.

Speaking at St Paul's Musami, Chiwenga said the principle, which emphasises that Zimbabweans must take responsibility for building their own country, aligns with ongoing efforts to mobilise communities, churches and private groups to contribute to national development.

He said grassroots and independent development initiatives play a critical role in economic growth, particularly when combined into a coordinated national effort.

"We are all one community… we are the only ones who can build our own country," Chiwenga said, linking the philosophy to reconstruction efforts following natural disasters such as Cyclone Idai in 2019.

He referenced earlier experiences, including a visit to Kopa-Jopa after the cyclone, saying such moments reinforced the importance of self-reliance in national rebuilding efforts.

Chiwenga also commended the Catholic Church for its development work at St Paul's Musami, noting that faith-based organisations have historically played a significant role in education and infrastructure development.

"We are so moved that the St Joseph Guild and everyone has this thought that we are the only ones who can build our own church, not anyone else," he said.

The Vice President further reflected on his personal ties to the institution, noting that two of his brothers were educated at St Paul's Musami in the early 1960s.

He also recalled the area's liberation war history, saying it witnessed intense fighting and significant loss of life during the struggle for independence.

Chiwenga's remarks come as government continues to promote the "Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo" doctrine as a central pillar of its development agenda under President Mnangagwa's administration, emphasising self-reliance, community participation and national ownership of development projects.
