The ruling ZANU-PF has announced the appointment of retired army commander Philip Valerio Sibanda to the party's Politburo with immediate effect.

In a notice issued on Monday by the party's Department of Information and Publicity, ZANU-PF Secretary for Information and Publicity Christopher Mutsvangwa said the appointment was made by the party’s First Secretary and President, Emmerson Mnangagwa.

According to the notice, President Mnangagwa exercised his mandate in terms of Article 9, Section 65 as read together with Section 67 of the ZANU-PF Constitution in making the appointment.

"His Excellency Cde. Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has appointed General (Rtd) Philip Valerio Sibanda to the ZANU-PF Politburo. This appointment is with immediate effect," read part of the statement.

General Sibanda retired from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces last year after serving as Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army and later Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.

His appointment to the Politburo, the ruling party's highest decision-making body outside congress, is expected to further strengthen ties between the party and liberation war veterans and former military leadership.

The development comes as ZANU-PF continues restructuring and consolidating its leadership structures ahead of future political and organisational programmes.
