Champions Scotland FC and football giants CAPS United are set to become the first teams to play at the refurbished National Sports Stadium in a Castle Lager Premiership match scheduled for May 31.

The Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture announced that the stadium, which has been closed for nearly five years for extensive renovations, will host an operational test match as part of the final processes before the official commissioning of the facility.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Nicholas Moyo, said the match would be used to evaluate the stadium's readiness ahead of hosting major domestic and international sporting events.

"The operational test match is intended to assess stadium systems, spectator flow, safety protocols, seating arrangements, pitch standards and overall operational readiness of the facility ahead of full-scale international and local sporting activities," said Moyo.

He encouraged football supporters and members of the public to attend the historic occasion in large numbers as Zimbabwe prepares to reopen one of its most important sporting venues.

"Members of the public are encouraged to come in their numbers and witness this historic moment as the giant National Sports Stadium prepares to reclaim its place as the home of Zimbabwean football and international sporting excellence," he said.

According to the ministry, the renovated stadium now features upgraded bucket seats, modernised amenities, improved playing surfaces and enhanced spectator facilities designed to meet international standards.

"The renovated facility now boasts upgraded bucket seats, modernised amenities, improved playing surfaces and enhanced spectator experience in line with international standards.

"Let us unite in celebrating this important milestone in the revival of Zimbabwean sports infrastructure," Moyo added.

The reopening of the National Sports Stadium is expected to boost Zimbabwe's chances of hosting international football matches again after years of restrictions linked to infrastructure concerns.
