A Headlands family has been left devastated after a four-year-old girl suddenly collapsed and died while walking home with her mother and siblings.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday at Berthel Cop Business Centre in Kubatana, Headlands, leaving the local community in shock.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident.

According to police, Juliet Mashereni (36), a teacher at Gazaland Private College, was walking home to Kubatana Business Centre with her three children, aged six years, four years and one year seven months.

"When they were only a few metres from their home, the six-year-old child called out to the mother, informing her that the four-year-old had collapsed," said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

"The mother found the child lying face down on the ground and unconscious. She tried to lift her and called out to her, but there was no response."

The mother alerted her husband and the couple rushed the child to Rusape General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

A report was made to ZRP Headlands, and police attended the scene.

"The body was taken to Rusape General Hospital mortuary where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigations are in progress," Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said.

Police are awaiting the results of the post-mortem examination to establish the cause of the child's sudden death.
