Highlanders Chairman survived ouster attempt

Highlanders Football Club Board Chairman Luke Mkandla has survived an attempt to remove him from office after an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) ended without a resolution to oust him, amid allegations from some members that the meeting was structured to protect his position.
The EGM was convened following growing pressure from sections of the club's membership demanding Mkandla's resignation over a number of governance concerns.
The controversy follows allegations surrounding the reported disappearance of US$40,000 during the club's pre-season tour of Botswana, outstanding salaries owed to players and technical staff, and claims that suspended Chief Executive Officer Denzil Mkandla was reporting directly to the board chairman in violation of the club's governance structures.
The meeting started two hours behind schedule and ended shortly afterwards, with some members expressing frustration that board members were not given adequate opportunity to present or debate the issues that had led to the EGM being called.
Harare Chapter Chairman Thulani Dube criticised the manner in which the meeting was conducted, arguing that members were denied meaningful engagement.
"The meeting was guided. Talking was a waste of time because people were rushing to the game. By 1pm the meeting was done. It was a talk show, with no structure to bring about resolutions," Dube said.
Members also raised questions over an alleged meeting between Mkandla and a diaspora supporter, while reports that club benefactor Sir Wicknell Chivhayo had suspended financial support pending explanations over the governance concerns added further pressure on the board.
Despite the growing dissatisfaction among some members, the EGM concluded without any decision to remove Mkandla, allowing him to remain in his position as Highlanders board chairman.
The outcome is unlikely to end the debate over governance at the club, with members expected to continue demanding answers over financial management, leadership structures and accountability issues affecting one of Zimbabwe's biggest football institutions.
