Former Zimbabwe national football coach Wieslaw Grabowski has died in Poland at the age of 70.
Grabowski, who passed away on Wednesday, played a significant role in the development of Zimbabwean football during the 1990s and is widely credited with identifying and nurturing some of the country's finest talents while owning Darryn T Football Club.
His eye for talent helped launch the careers of several players who would go on to become household names in Zimbabwean football.
In 1995, Grabowski was appointed head coach of Zimbabwe's Under-23 national team for the All-Africa Games. Under his guidance, the Young Warriors enjoyed an impressive campaign, finishing as runners-up and winning the silver medal.
The team featured a generation of players who later became stars of Zimbabwean football, including Gift Muzadzi, Alois Bunjira, Edelbert Dinha, Lloyd Chitembwe and Norman Mapeza.
Grabowski also had a brief stint as coach of the senior Zimbabwe national team in 2002.
Paying tribute, journalist Steve Vickers described Grabowski as an "extremely colourful and outspoken character," reflecting on his larger-than-life personality and lasting influence on the local game.
His death comes barely a month after the passing of another former Warriors coach, Roy Barreto, who died in Portugal at the age of 72.
Barreto enjoyed a distinguished coaching career in Zimbabwe, leading clubs such as Zimbabwe Saints and Highlanders before joining the national team coaching set-up, where he also served as assistant to the late German coach Reinhard Fabisch.
Grabowski's passing marks the loss of another respected figure in Zimbabwean football, whose contribution to player development and the national game will be remembered by generations of players and supporters.
