The Drivers' Association of Zimbabwe has approached Parliament seeking legislation that would introduce a minimum educational qualification for people applying for driver's licences.
The association wants the driving occupation to be professionalised and regulated through a legally recognised professional body responsible for setting entry-level educational requirements.
The Speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, announced the petition during Tuesday's National Assembly sitting while reading out notices of petitions received by the House.
"Third, a petition from the Drivers' Association of Zimbabwe, beseeching Parliament to enact legislation that professionalises the driving occupation and transforms it into a profession with a professional association, which will be mandated by law to set entry educational qualifications," Mudenda said.
The petition has since been referred to the Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development for consideration.
The association's proposal, if adopted, would introduce educational standards for entry into the driving occupation in addition to existing requirements for obtaining a driver's licence.
The move comes amid broader calls for greater professionalism and accountability within Zimbabwe's transport sector.
The Parliamentary committee is expected to consider the petition and make recommendations on the proposed legislation.
