The Socialist Party has condemned the killing of former Lunte Member of Parliament and former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya, describing his death as "frightening, saddening and annoying."
In a statement, Socialist Party president Fred M'membe said news of Kafwaya's death had sent shockwaves through the party leadership.
"The news of the death of Hon Mutotwe Kafwaya sent a cold chill down our spines and has deeply moved the leadership of the Socialist Party," M'membe said.
The party extended its condolences to Kafwaya's widow, children, family and friends, while paying tribute to his life and public service.
M'membe said the country's growing political divisions and intolerance had contributed to what he described as "this bloody drama".
He argued that no political doctrine, electoral dispute or law enforcement operation could justify what he called the "physical elimination" of Kafwaya and any other citizen who may have died in the same incident.
"No crime can be committed in the name of elections or law enforcement," M'membe said.
He called for restraint, humanity and justice as investigations into Kafwaya's death continue.
"Let a sense of sobriety, humanity and justice prevail in our hearts and in our homeland," he said.
The Socialist Party's statement comes after Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba confirmed that Kafwaya was killed during a joint intelligence-led operation in Lusaka's Kabulonga area.
Police said the operation involved members of the Central Joint Operations Committee, including the Drug Enforcement Commission, and was mounted following intelligence concerning individuals allegedly considered a threat to national security.
According to police, officers came under gunfire when they arrived at the premises, prompting them to return fire. Kafwaya was fatally wounded and later identified by his family.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
"May Kafwaya's soul rest in eternal peace," M'membe said.
