Chamisa, Chin'ono trade barbs

A war of words has erupted between former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa and prominent journalist and filmmaker Hopewell Chin'ono, with Chamisa accusing the journalist of peddling lies and misinformation.

The public exchange followed a series of social media posts by Chin'ono criticising opposition leaders and their supporters for rejecting scrutiny and attacking those who raise concerns about their political conduct.

Chin'ono was responding to journalist Mduduzi Mathuthu, who claimed that recently appointed senator Brilliant Dube, who previously served as Chamisa's director of protocol, had been part of the opposition leader's inner circle.

Chin'ono argued that political supporters often become hostile when their preferred leaders are subjected to criticism.

"When you tell Zimbabweans what is wrong with their political system, many become absolutely furious with you. They call you names, insult you and accuse you of betrayal simply because they do not want their political favourites to be criticised," Chin'ono wrote on Facebook.

He said shielding political leaders from criticism created conditions for poor leadership, manipulation and a lack of accountability.

"When citizens treat political leaders as untouchable heroes and attack anyone who questions them, they create the conditions for incompetence, manipulation and failure to thrive. Leaders who are protected from criticism eventually become arrogant, detached and unaccountable," he said.

Chin'ono also revisited a 2022 social media post by opposition figure Gift Siziba in which Siziba praised Dube, who was then serving as Chamisa's director of protocol.

Siziba had described Dube as a senior bureaucrat in the presidency who had demonstrated "amazing work capabilities" in ensuring that Chamisa operated efficiently.

Commenting on the old post, Chin'ono wrote: "Mnangagwa's new senator. I could not help but laugh at the way they were bootlicking her in the comments. These are the same supporters who insulted us in 2022 when we sounded the alarm."

In a separate post, Chin'ono criticised Chamisa over the formation and administration of the CCC, arguing that the opposition leader founded the party and became its president without establishing a constitution and formal party structures.

The criticism prompted a direct response from Chamisa, who accused Chin'ono of abandoning journalistic principles.

"Dear Hopewell Chin'ono, a proper and balanced journalist is a truth-teller who reports facts, not fiction. Be a journalist, not a propagandist who peddles lies and misinformation to serve the interests of the oppressors," Chamisa said.

Chin'ono challenged Chamisa to substantiate the accusation.

"Please identify the specific lies and misinformation you claim I have peddled. Point to the precise statement, explain what is false about it and provide the correct facts," he responded.

The exchange triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with comments reflecting the deep divisions within Zimbabwe's opposition political landscape.

The public confrontation comes as opposition parties continue to grapple with internal divisions, mistrust, allegations of infiltration and leadership disputes, factors that have weakened cooperation among groups seeking to challenge Zanu PF.

The dispute between Chamisa and Chin'ono has also reignited debate over the role of journalists, political commentators and opposition supporters in holding political leaders accountable, particularly in an increasingly polarised political environment.
