A Chipinge man who had just lost his child was robbed of money meant to buy a coffin, forcing the grieving family to bury the child in a cardboard box.

The case came to light at the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court, where Passmore Mushakavanhu (21) appeared before magistrate Nixon Mangoti facing a robbery charge. He was sentenced to four years in prison.

The court heard that the complainant, Collins Makuyana (35), was walking along the Ngundu–Tanganda Road towards Checheche at around 3am on 13 August when he came across Mushakavanhu warming himself by a fire. Makuyana joined him briefly before leaving an hour later to continue his journey to a nearby bus stop.

Mushakavanhu followed Makuyana, assaulted him with fists and stole his cellphone and US$200. Makuyana reported the matter to the police, leading to Mushakavanhu’s arrest. A search resulted in the recovery of Makuyana’s cellphone and US$40, which Mushakavanhu had hidden in his socks.

The court was told that the stolen money had been set aside to buy a coffin for Makuyana’s deceased child. With the funds gone, the family was left with no option but to bury the child in a cardboard box.

This case adds to ongoing discussions around violent crime and community protection.
