Soccer player dies after collision during Guruve match
A 41-year-old social soccer player from Guruve has died after sustaining injuries following a collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a match in Ward 19.
The deceased, identified as Joseph Chikomo, was injured during the game and later succumbed to his injuries, leaving the local community in mourning.
Guruve Ward 19 councillor Samson Kamu confirmed the death and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
"We are currently at a funeral in my ward where Chikomo died after sustaining injuries in a match," said Kamu.
He said the tragedy highlighted the importance of emergency preparedness at community sporting events, particularly as social soccer continues to be used as a platform to combat drug and substance abuse among young people.
"We have lost as a ward. This has taught us that whenever we play social soccer to fight drug and substance abuse, we should have funds set aside for emergencies," he said.
"Chikomo died after it took a long time to raise funds for medical attention."
Kamu said the incident should serve as a lesson for communities organising sporting activities to establish emergency response mechanisms and contingency funds to assist injured players when accidents occur.
The tragedy has raised concerns about the lack of medical support and emergency resources at grassroots sporting events, where participants often play without access to immediate healthcare assistance.
Community members have since called for improved safety measures and emergency preparedness at local sporting tournaments to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
