VICE-PRESIDENT Constantino Chiwenga was conspicuously absent from the inaugural President's Ball fundraising dinner held at the Hippodrome in Braeside, Harare, amid reported tensions within Zanu-PF following the dramatic cancellation of a party politburo meeting.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa and First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa attended the high-profile event alongside Vice-President Kembo Mohadi, Secretary-General Jacob Mudenda and party chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri.

Chiwenga was the only member of the party's presidium reportedly absent from the gathering.

His absence came a day after the cancellation of the Zanu-PF politburo meeting following disagreements over proposed amendments to the ruling party's constitution, which were reportedly intended to align it with the national Constitution.

The meeting's cancellation has fuelled speculation about internal divisions within the ruling party, particularly amid the ongoing succession debate surrounding Mnangagwa's political future.

The Vice-President's absence from the fundraising dinner also followed his reported non-attendance at the funeral of prominent businessman and Zanu-PF benefactor Wicknell Chivayo earlier in the week.

The inaugural President's Ball was organised by fundraising committee chairperson Philip Chiyangwa, with the event targeting US$6 million to support preparations for the Zanu-PF National People's Conference scheduled to take place in Chinhoyi from October 12 to 17.

Chiwenga's absence from the two high-profile events is likely to attract further attention as developments within Zanu-PF continue to shape debate over the party's leadership and succession.

However, the reasons for his absence from the fundraising dinner were not officially disclosed.
