The family of the late Zimbabwean businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Chivayo has formally registered his multimillion-dollar estate with the Master of the High Court, paving the way for the administration and eventual distribution of his vast fortune.

The estate was reportedly registered about three weeks ago, with an initial meeting already held to discuss the administration process.

However, an executor or executrix has yet to be appointed, meaning the formal process of identifying Chivayo's assets, assessing outstanding debts and determining how his wealth will be distributed has not yet commenced.

According to The Sunday Mail, senior officials at the Master of the High Court confirmed the registration but declined to reveal details about the estate or its estimated value.

"We can confirm that the estate has since been registered about three weeks ago, and a first meeting held. But the executor or executrix of the estate is yet to be appointed," a source familiar with the developments said.

Another source indicated that the Master's Office would only provide further information once the necessary administrative processes had progressed.

"We will get in touch with you when we are ready and have something to say about the estate, but as of now, we cannot give you the finer details of the estate," the source said.

Chivayo died alongside his wife, Lucy Muteke, in a helicopter crash in Marondera on September 30, leaving behind two minor children and extensive business interests.

His death has raised questions about the future ownership and management of his companies, investments, luxury properties and other assets accumulated during his business career.

The estate administration process could prove particularly complicated because of unresolved legal disputes involving the late businessman.

Among the most significant is a US$25 million matrimonial property dispute involving his former wife, Sonja Madzikanda, which was awaiting determination by the Supreme Court at the time of his death.

The outcome of that dispute could have implications for the identification and distribution of assets forming part of Chivayo's estate.

Under Zimbabwe's deceased estate administration procedures, an appointed executor is responsible for identifying and safeguarding the deceased's assets, establishing liabilities, addressing valid claims and distributing the remaining estate to lawful beneficiaries.

Until an executor is appointed, the full extent of Chivayo's wealth and outstanding financial obligations is unlikely to be formally established.

The registration of the estate represents the first major legal step towards resolving the late businessman's financial affairs, although the process could take considerable time given the reported scale of his holdings and the outstanding litigation.

With two minor children among those potentially affected by the administration of the estate, the proceedings are expected to attract significant public interest as the Master's Office moves towards appointing an executor and determining the way forward.
