A PROPHET accused of conniving with two suspected witches who were found undressed at his house in Budiriro, Harare, has dissociated himself from the women, saying he never hired the pair as a publicity stunt to lure clients.

Alfred Mupfumbati (30), popularly known as Madzibaba Mateo in Budiriro, accused Elmet Mbewe and Christine Nyamupandu of fabricating the allegations in an attempt to save themselves from facing the wrath of the law.

"I don't even know these two women," said Mupfumbati.

"I have nothing to do with them and have never connived with them or anyone to perform such a shameful act to attract more clients. I am a spiritual healer nothing more."

He was responding to allegations by the two single mothers who identified themselves as Maria Moyo and Chipo Chakaja from Gokwe Nembudziya when they were arrested outside his house along Gatawa Street in Budiriro on September 10 before they revealed their real names recently in court.

The pair was found in possession of an owl, two winnowing baskets, animal skins, a gourd, talisman and stuff believed to be used for witchcraft purposes.

The women claimed that they were not witches, but had been hired by Mupfumbati and promised a Nissan Navara as payment.

Mupfumbati was also subsequently arrested and is now facing a similar charge of contravening section 98 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act for allegedly engaging in a practice commonly associated with witchcraft.

He is out on US$200 bail.

"I don't know anything about these women whatever they are, witches or what?

"I dismiss their claims with contempt. I heard that they alleged all this while in prison that I had hired them. This is all false," Mupfumbati said.

He dismissed allegations that he had promised them a Nissan Navara after their assignment.

"Yes I have a Nissan Navara, but I haven't finished paying for it. So how can I promise to give the car away," he said, adding that the two were pathological liars who even gave false names to the police.

"You know when you are in prison, you can do anything to get out. So I assume they concocted this story to come out," he said.

When The Herald arrived at Mupfumbati's house where he conducts his healing sessions, a group of people was gathered outside awaiting their turn to consult him.

The group which included men, women and youthful girls sat patiently on two benches.

"If you want to see the prophet urgently take his contact on that door and call or you will have to wait for your turn in the queue," said a talkative woman who was holding a baby.

Outside the small two-roomed house, a blue Nissan Navara was parked under a tree.
