A 14-year-old Chitungwiza boy is battling for life after being shot when a bid to disarm a gun-wielding man by a member of the Air Force of Zimbabwe went horribly wrong.

National police spokesperson chief superintendent Paul Nyathi revealed that the incident occurred when an AFZ officer Gerald Gurure attempted to disarm one Trust Jazi.

Jazi is said to have drew the firearm as he accused an informal trader stationed at Unit J in Seke of stealing his cell- phones. Insp Nyathi disclosed that both Gurure and Jazi are in police custody.

"On Friday night Jazi, who is reported to have been drunk, parked his car near the intersection of Kasipoti and Nanhanga roads before falling asleep," he said.

"When he woke up the following morning he discovered that his three cellphones were missing. He started accusing a vendor identified as Guide Porongi of stealing his phones.

"Jazi reportedly produced a gun and forced Porongi to enter his car before threatening to shoot him if he did not produce the cellphones.

"It was at that point that Gurure who was passing by allegedly ordered Jazi to surrender the gun to him."

Gurure then reportedly tried to disarm Jazi before the gun discharged with its bullet hitting the 14-year- old boy who was among the sizeable crowd that had gathered to witness the early morning scuffle.

Police were yet to ascertain whether the pistol was registered by the time of going to print. The boy was reportedly in a critical condition at Chitungwiza General Hospital.
