A FORMER cop has appeared in court on allegations of extorting US$5 000 from a medical doctor, after accusing him of buying a stolen medical machine.
Basil Kichima, 36, appeared in court minus his alleged accomplices who are said to be still on the run.
It is alleged that Basil and his gang confronted Dr Taziva Maketa who operates from Glen View Medical Centre and identified themselves as cops.
Apparently they accused Dr Maketa of having bought a stolen suction machine and they told him that he was under arrest.
Reports are that they then told the doctor to walk with them to their car, and they drove to the central business district whilst they were threatening him with detention.
And it, is also alleged that they pressurised him, as they demanded money in return for his freedom and he gave in.
It is said that he drove to Pomona food court where Dr Maketa's wife came and gave him US$4 000 but the gang demanded
more cash.
The State further alleges that they drove to an ATM where he withdrew US$1 000 and gave them. Allegations are that they later dropped off the doctor and they went away but police investigations led to the arrest of Basil while his alleged accomplices are still on the run.
