The latest Misery Index from the Cato Institute shows that Zimbabwe is not one of the most miserable countries to live in. Apparently, living in South Africa is more miserable than living in Palestine or Iran.
In its 2015/16 rankings, Zimbabwe does not feature in the 10 most miserable countries in the world. The index comes as a surprise as Zimbabwe has high unemployment rate of about 85%, high lending rate if you can get someone to give you money, deflation rate of -2.5% which, according to the Cato measure, is not a cause for misery. Its a known secret that Zimbabwe GDP growth has been stalling.
The misery index is based on four key data points: Unemployment levels, interest rates, consumer prices and economic growth. The Misery Index is the sum of the unemployment rate, lending rate, and the inflation rate, minus the percent change in real GDP per capita.
