Two men from Mahole and Nkankezi areas in Filabusi were on Monday slapped with and effective 18 months in jail for attacking a fellow villager with empty beer bottles and stones leaving him with deep cuts on the head.

Mulamuli Luphahla (23) and Freedom Sibanda (21) pleaded not guilty to assault charges when they appeared before Filabusi magistrate Mzingaye Moyo.

The magistrate however convicted and sentenced them to 24 months in jail.

Six months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The court heard that on October 13 this year the two were at 727 Night Club at 10:30pm in the company of one Mlauzi who is still at large.

They were drinking beer when Mlauzi approached the complainant Michael Gumbo of Mleja village in Filabusi.

He accused him of being pompous to draw the attention of patrons to himself because he had money to buy beer.

This did not go down well with Gumbo who asked Mlauzi to leave him alone. A quarrel ensued and Mlauzi started assaulting him with a beer bottle before Luphahla and Sibanda joined him. The three assaulted Gumbo with beer bottles and stones all over the body.

He sustained some cuts on the head and he managed to run away but they followed him  and further attacked him with stones.

He sustained cuts on the head and was bleeding profusely before he became unconscious.

He was rushed to hospital and a report made to the police led to the two's arrest. Mlauzi is still at large.
