Open letter: Yett Matobo vacancy notice unfairly discriminatory
25 May 2016 at 10:39hrs | Views
This is an open letter to an organization calling itself YETT which recently posted a vacancy notice for a Post Graduate Intern to work in Matobo district and be doing regular travel withi the district. The organization claims in their advert that someone resident in Matobo will be diserable and further claims that the person should be sensitive to culture, gender, religion and age. The advert further says the candidate should be fluent in Ndebele reading and writing and Shona.
I wish to advise YETT to retender their advert because it is grossly discriminatory to the inhabitants of Matobo and Maabeleland South and it has an insensitive and unfair selection criteria. I will explain why:
1. In Matobo District the languages that are spoken are Ndebele, Tjikalanga and English. The inhabitants of Matobo dont speak Shona ad why should Shona be a prerequisite in a non Shona speaking area? Is this because this is a Shona organization therefore it is trying to import its linguistic advantages to the district?
2. By virture of the fact that in Matabeleland South schools we dont teach Shona, how then is YETT expecting to get someone who is a local resident and who is fluent in written and spoken Shona is the locals didnt speak Shona at all?
3. YETT wants someone who is senstitive to local culture, but on its own the organization is not sensitive to local culture because if it was, it would have known that in Matobo the predominant local languages are Ndebele and Tjikalanga and it would have therefore placed Tjikalanga and Ndebele as local languages of preference and not Shona.
I therefore would like to urge: a) YETT to respect local languages, culture and people of Matobo and Matabeleland South by removing Shona in this job placement and put local languages only,
b) local leaders of Matobo to reject YETT if it continues to operate with such unfair and discriminatory tendencies,
c) local organizations of Matabeleland which work to promote local cultures to tell YETT to stop this unfair criterion.
If YETT does not stop this, some of us will ensure that the organization does not operate smoothly in the area and we shall disrupt all their activities and ensure that the locals refuse their activities.
