HARARE â€" Dynamos star midfielder Murape Charles Murape yesterday appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Olivia Mariga following his arrest for allegedly snatching $100 from a shop attendant at a wholesale outlet in the town.

According to prosecutor Caroline Kugarakuripi, on December 22, 2011 at 1730hrs at Fake Dealer Wholesalers in Zengeza 2, Chitungwiza, Murape, 31, unlawfully and intentionally took $100 from Francisca Madondo, 37, and threatened her with violence.

It is the state's case that Murape, who was in the company of two brothers, went to Fake Dealer Wholesalers with the intention of buying a crate of 1-litre soft drinks for which he paid $12.

It is alleged he was asked to collect the drinks from the back of the shop. The footballer is reported to have returned complaining the drinks were not cold. Madondo told him the unrefrigerated drinks were sold at wholesale price while the cold ones were sold at a retail price of $14,40 per crate.

This did not go down well with Murape who became furious and entered the shop counter, grabbed Madondo's hand and reportedly forcibly snatched $100, it is alleged. Thereafter, Murape allegedly drove off at high speed. Madondo made a report at St Mary's Police Station, leading to the footballer's arrest.

In his defence, Murape argued he knew of no place in Zimbabwe where drinks are priced differently irrespective of whether they were cold or warm. He said he had snatched $10 that Madondo had received from another client adding that there had been a harsh exchange of words after Madondo refused to refund him.

He argued since he lived in the neighbourhood, they could still come and talk to him if there was an issue. Murape was remanded out of custody to January 6 for continuation of trial.
