The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) says it is set to meet with the winners of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly theme song to finalise the project.

Head of corporate affairs Sugar Chagonda said the authority will hand over notes from the adjudicators to the producer, Russell "Russo" Chiradza, and his team so that they fine-tune the demo song.

This, he said, would apply to the other five winners of the competition.

"We want them to perfect their projects so that they can be ready for use.

"Recommendations were made by the adjudication team and they have to take them into consideration," he said.

During the meeting, the winners will, as per agreement, be handed part of the prize money that they won. For coming out tops, Russo and his team of musicians, which include top musicians Suluman Chimbetu, Chiwoniso Maraire, Audius Mtawarira, Albert Nyathi and Clive Mono Mukundu, will be getting US$30 000.

Easygoing afro-jazz crooner Tanga wekwaSando, who was placed in second position, will receive US$15 000 and Jairos Hamba Hamba, who took third spot, will get US$12 500. Jennifer Muneni, Bob Nyabinde and Rute Mbangwa will each get US$10 000, US$7 500 and US$5 000 respectively.

"We will give the demo song producers a third of the money that they won when we meet with them," said Chagonda. Going forward, the ZTA official said his team was working full swing on modalities to make the carnival and tourism night to be held in Victoria Falls on August 23 and 24 respectively a success.

The cultural carnival will welcome the UNWTO delegates at the general assembly in the resort town. And it is through this event that various local cultures are expected to be showcased.

"The events will parade to the visiting delegates, what we have to offer as a country.

"This will be done through traditional dance, display of artefacts, street parades and performances," he explained. "After successfully hosting the country's inaugural carnival in the capital recently, Government saw it fit to host another similar event to welcome the UNWTO delegates and showcase the country's diverse cultures," said Chagonda, adding,

"Though it will be a similar concept with the inaugural carnival, the numbers of participants will be slightly low because of the geographical location of the resort town."

According to information provided by the country's tourism body, a number of groups and corporates were already registering with them to be part of the carnival. After the carnival, a tourism night will be held at Victoria Falls Primary School.

Among the artistes expected to dazzle fans are Sulumani Chimbetu, Alick Macheso, Jah Prayzah, Chiwoniso Maraire and Audius Mtawarira. It is also at the same event that the UNWTO theme song winners will officially launch their track.

The 20th session of the UNWTO general assembly, to be jointly host by Zimbabwe and Zambia, will be held from August 24 to 29. The event is expected boost the tourism in both countries.
