LIMPOPO, South Africa - A devastating bus accident on the N1 highway near Musina has claimed the lives of at least 42 people, including a 10-month-old child, in one of the country’s deadliest road tragedies this year.

The bus, which was reportedly travelling from Gqeberha to Harare, veered off the road and rolled down an embankment, landing on its roof. Emergency services rushed to the scene near Ingwe Lodge, outside Louis Trichardt, where rescue operations continued late into the night.

Authorities confirmed that the bus was carrying Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals, many of whom were returning home. The crash has left dozens injured, with several passengers still believed to be trapped in the wreckage.

Limpopo Transport MEC Violet Mathye visited the scene and expressed condolences to the victims' families, calling the incident "a national tragedy."

The N1 highway remains closed in both directions, with motorists advised to use Witvlag and Williespoort turnoffs as alternative routes.

The Office of the Premier has taken over communications due to the scale of the disaster, and a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.

This incident has reignited calls for stricter safety regulations on long-distance travel and better enforcement of roadworthiness standards for cross-border transport vehicles.
