SOUL Brothers legendary keyboard player Moses Ngwenya says he is lucky to be alive after he was shot by gunmen last week on the same street that reggae musician Lucky Dube was shot dead in 2007.
Reports from South Africa are that three robbers shot at Ngwenya twice and drove away in his black Audi A4. The thugs also stole a computer worth R15,000, an iPad worth R17,000 and two cellphones worth R10,000.
Speaking from his South African base, Ngwenya confirmed that he was shot on the right arm and robbed last week and assured his fans that he was recovering well at home.
"I was shot during an armed robbery outside my house in Rosetenville. The incident happened at around 8PM. I can assure fans that I'm fine and they shouldn't worry about me as I'm recovering well at home," he said.
Black Moses, as Ngwenya is known to fans, said he was grateful that he was alive.
"I'd like to thank all my fans who've been calling me with words of encouragement. I'm grateful that I'm alive and God and my ancestors protected me from being killed by these robbers," he said.
Narrating the robbery that happened on Lang Street, Ngwenya said he had just arrived at home at around 8PM on the fateful day.
"When I got out of the car, I then decided to go to the nearby shops to buy some items. All of a sudden, three men jumped out of the darkness when I was in the driveway, pointing guns at me. They demanded money and a scuffle ensued and one of them shot me twice on the right hand. They drove away in my car, my iPad, iPhone, Apple Mac Book, a cell phone, my passport and IDs. This all amounted a little over R40,000," he said.
Ngwenya said afterwards he was accompanied to the police station and hospital by friends and neighbours.
He said doctors gave him two months to recover and would be back on the keyboard then.
"When the robbers disappeared into the night, I went to a nearby police station to report the case and was then taken to hospital. Doctors stitched me up and they said I'll fully recover in two months."
Ngwenya said they were always ready to tour Zimbabwe and were waiting for local promoters to bring them.
"We know we've many fans in the country as Zimbabwe is like a second home to us. We're ready to come and perform for our fans anytime as long as promoters pay us our dues," he said.
Ngwenya formed a formidable team with David Masondo, the lead singer of the Soul Brothers, that churned out hit after hit during their hey days.
