A man accused of exposing his buttocks in public and knocking a female police officer unconscious has appeared in a Sydney court.

Damian James Joyce, 28, of Newtown, is charged with assaulting the officer and causing actual bodily harm, offensive behaviour in a public place and resisting police.

He is also charged with assaulting another female officer and two counts of assaulting a male officer.

Joyce was allegedly drunk on the evening of December 23 when he came to the attention of police at Pyrmont, in inner Sydney.

He was granted bail in the Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday on conditions including a ban on entering any licensed premises.

In a statement released after his arrest, police said officers approached after seeing him in the street with his jeans lowered to his knees, exposing his buttocks.

Police said he later tried to snatch his drivers licence and a police notebook from a male constable taking down his details.

A struggle occurred and the man allegedly grabbed the officer around the throat.

After his arrest, he allegedly elbowed a female senior constable in the jaw, making her fall to the ground and hit her head on concrete, losing consciousness for about two minutes.

The case was adjourned to March 15.
