Dokora backs down on Matabeleland schools closure

Government has reversed its controversial directive to shut down all Matabeleland schools on Thursday and Friday in preparation for President Robert Mugabe's lavish birthday bash on Saturday in Matopos.
Early today it emerged that Primary and Secondary Education minister Lazarus Dokora ordered all schools to shut down sparking sharp criticism on social media.
However, hours later the education ministry permanent secretary Sylvia Utete-Masango said schools would be opened.
She said " We have consulted with the provincial educations officers and it has been noted that there is no need for schools to close as delegates to the 21st February Movement will only start arriving after 4pm on Friday and by then schools would have long knocked off".
However, it is not clear whether the message has reached all pupils.
"That's true. The damage has already been done. VERY FEW WILL ATTEND LESSONS TOMMOROW. After all furniture had been removed and locked up" Raymond Majongwe, Secretary General of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) wrote on his official twitter account @RMajongwe this evening.
