Zimbabwe tourism operators told to register or face closure

The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) has issued a firm ultimatum to tourism operators across the country, warning that all unregistered facilities risk closure if they fail to regularise their status by 28 February 2026.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority said nationwide inspections will begin on 1 March 2026 in all ten provinces, with law enforcement agencies set to assist in verifying compliance and shutting down non-compliant operators.

"Failure to register will result in the closure of unregistered facilities," the Authority said.

The enforcement drive comes as Government moves to tighten regulation within the sector while simultaneously lowering barriers to compliance. According to the ZTA, licence and registration fees have been significantly reduced across all categories as part of broader ease-of-doing-business reforms aimed at fostering a competitive and sustainable tourism industry.

The Authority cited Section 36 of the Tourism Act, which makes it mandatory for all designated tourist facilities to register before operating.

Officials also urged members of the public to avoid using unregistered establishments, warning that such facilities operate outside the regulatory framework meant to safeguard service standards, safety and consumer protection.

"The public is strongly discouraged from utilising unregistered tourism facilities and is encouraged to report any facility operating without valid registration to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority," the statement read.

Tourism operators who have not yet complied have been urged to immediately begin the registration process to avoid disruptions to their businesses once inspections commence.

"Compliance is not optional. Register, operate legally and protect the integrity of Zimbabwe's tourism sector," the ZTA said.
