Kelsea Mnangagwa distances herself from First Family scandal

LAWYERS representing 22-year-old Kelsea Mnangagwa, the second wife of Collins Mnangagwa, President Emmerson Mnangagwa's twin son, have written to First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa denying their client's involvement in a scandal engulfing the First Family.
The letter, written by lawyers Admire Rubaya and Everson Chatambudza, seeks to distance Kelsea from allegations that have circulated on social media and in some reports concerning a dispute involving her family and the First Lady.
"It has never been our intention to scandalise you or the first family," the lawyers said.
The lawyers described the allegations as a narrative allegedly manufactured by "others, opportunists, detractors and adversaries of the first family" with the intention of creating divisions.
"Our client is not party to that scandalous enterprise, and neither are we," they said.
The letter follows allegations that the First Lady confronted Kelsea's mother, Amina Jessub Arab, over claims involving Collins, including allegations that she had placed a spell on him and had taken assets allegedly worth more than US$10 million.
The allegations have not been established in court.
Kelsea is currently in custody in Harare, where she is seeking bail in a case involving allegations of drug possession and money laundering. She was arrested on August 4.
Her mother, sister and aunt are also being held without bail at Mlondolozi Prison near Bulawayo in connection with separate drug-related charges.
The controversy has generated intense speculation on social media, including suggestions that the First Lady was exerting influence over the legal process. Such claims are reportedly said to have angered Auxillia.
In the letter, Kelsea is said to be seeking an amicable resolution to the dispute and has expressed regret over the manner in which the controversy has escalated.
The lawyers said their client "is fully committed to taking whatever steps are necessary to achieve an amicable resolution" and had "reflected deeply on the events that have unfolded."
"She is very sorry that this issue has escalated to such great heights," the lawyers said.
Kelsea also reportedly "profusely apologises for what has befallen the name of the first family."
The apology appears to come against the backdrop of her reported defence that some of the properties at the centre of the dispute were purchased for her by Collins.
That position could potentially raise questions about the source of funds used to acquire the properties, particularly because police allege that Kelsea acquired them through proceeds from a drug-dealing enterprise.
The allegations remain subject to the criminal proceedings.
"Our client holds the institution of the first family in the highest regard and is deeply pained that her name has become entangled in a narrative she never sought to create," the lawyers said.
They expressed hope that direct and respectful engagement between the parties would help bring the dispute to an end.
The First Lady returned to Zimbabwe on Wednesday afternoon after travelling to Chimoio, Mozambique.
