The City of Bulawayo has strengthened its capacity for road construction and maintenance by commissioning four new road construction vehicles and an additional four tractors. The move is part of the municipality's ongoing strategy to improve service delivery and reduce reliance on outsourced equipment.
The newly commissioned fleet includes two Backhoe loaders, a CS11GC soil compactor, and a 140GC grader, all purchased using Bulawayo's 2025 allocation from the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) fund. ZINARA had allocated ZWG 33 million to the city, of which US$912,875 (ZWG 27,386,250) was used to acquire the equipment.
Mayor David Coltart said the procurement aligns with the city's strategic initiatives to enhance infrastructural development. He noted that last year the council resolved to equip the Department of Works with in-house machinery to cut costs previously incurred through hiring contractors.
The four tractors, purchased with the city's own funds at a cost of US$93,600 (ZWG 2,808,000), are intended primarily for grass-cutting and general maintenance tasks.
The commissioning ceremony on Friday was attended by representatives from the Office of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, ZINARA officials, members of the City Council, and officials from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works. The new equipment is expected to enhance Bulawayo's ability to construct, maintain, and rehabilitate roads more efficiently while supporting broader municipal service delivery goals.
