Mugabe welcomes six new ambassadors to Zimbabwe

Six new ambassadors presented their letters of credence to President Robert Mugabe at State House in Harare today.

The six new ambassadors are from Germany, Sweden, Iran, Portugal, France and Botswana.

The new German Ambassador to Zimbabwe is Hamburg-born trade merchant, Dr Thorsten Hutter, who also studied political science and has worked as diplomat in USA, South Korea, Kenya, Russia and Indonesia.

Dr Hutter said he will work for the strengthening of ties with Zimbabwe in various economic areas including infrastructure development.

At present, Germany is working with Zimbabwe in the areas of agriculture and sports development, among others.

The new Swedish Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mrs Sofia Margarirertta Andrietta Calltorp, said she will continue to work for the further strengthening of relations and cooperation between Zimbabwe and Sweden, whose ties go back as far as the struggle for independence.

Mrs Calltorp has been ambassador to Kenya, Switzerland and Sudan.

Next to present credentials to Cde Mugabe was the new Iranian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Ahmad Erfanian, who pledged to take Iran - Zimbabwe ties to greater heights through enhancing trade relations.

The new Portuguese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Eduardo Vaz Pereira Pracana holds degrees in Portuguese, English, French and European Studies.

He joined the ministry of foreign affairs of his country in 1984 and he has served as a permanent representative of his country in New York, Switzerland and Sweden.

He was also Consul-General in Rottedam, Netherlands at some stage.

In Africa, he was ambassador in Mozambique from 1984 to 1989.

The representative of France to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Richard Boidin has been a diplomat in Iraq, and has worked in various capacities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France.

Last to present his letters of credence to President Mugabe during this Thursday was the new Botswana Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Rtd Lieutenant General Louis Matshwenyego Fisher who is a former Commander of the Botswana Defence Forces.

He said the two countries will work closely to solve challenges that may arise between the two neighbouring states.

Zimbabwe and Botswana share common interests in livestock management, establishment of borders and in the wildlife sector.
