A 20-year-old man yesterday appeared in court on allegations of attacking a tenant at his late father's house after demanding rentals. Tafadzwa Mapotaringa appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Josephine Sande facing attempted murder charges. He was denied bail and was advised to apply at the High Court.

He is expected back in court on October 17. The prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that on October 2, this year Mapotaringa who stays in Bulawayo visited his late father's house in New Canaan, Highfield, Harare.

It is alleged that he called the tenant advising her that he wanted his share of the rentals. The court heard that Mapotaringa entered the tenant's room in the dead of the night wearing a mask and attacked her. He allegedly strangled her before she was rescued by her son. She started vomiting blood. Mapotaringa fled, but was later arrested.

In another case before the same magistrate, a 38-year-old man allegedly allowed his friend to slap to death a pick-pocketer who targeted him at King Fire nightclub in Dzivaresekwa 3.

Ronald Chitsinde appeared in court facing a murder charge. His friend who slapped the now deceased Barton Phiri is on the run. Ms Sande granted Chitsinde $100 bail and ordered him to report every Friday at Warren Park Police Station. The matter was remanded to November 30.

The prosecutor, Mr Mutizirwa alleged that on September 29 at around 9pm Chitsinde was enjoying himself at King Fire nightclub. It is alleged that he later discovered that Phiri was searching his pocket and trying to steal from him. The court heard that Chitsinde dragged Phiri out of the nightclub.

While outside it is alleged that Chitsinde called his accomplice who came and slapped Phiri once on his face. Phiri fell down and started vomiting beer. It is alleged that the public gathered and managed to apprehend Chitsinde while his accomplice escaped.

A report was made to the police who arrived at the scene when Phiri was already dead.
