A 72-YEAR-OLD Sanyati woman allegedly bludgeoned her husband with an axe after a quarrel over a chicken bought for his girlfriend.
Revesai Tokonya was transferred from Sanyati Mission Hospital to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment, but later succumbed to serious injuries sustained during the attack.
The incident occurred on May 18 last year at Kachemani Village, Chief Wozhele in Sanyati, where the couple was staying.
Margaret Tokonya, last week, pleaded not guilty to the murder charge when she appeared before High Court judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi for trial.
The suspect told the court that it was not her intention to cause her husband's death, but that she acted in self-defence when the now-deceased allegedly attacked her. The matter was postponed to November 28 for judgment.
It is the State's case that on the fateful day, the couple had a dispute over a chicken which Revesai had allegedly bought for his girlfriend.
The court heard, when Revesai bought the chicken, he sent his grandchild, Tanaka Mujuru, to take it to his girlfriend Sarudzayi Mudyiwa's homestead.
Apparently, Mujuru did not do as instructed, but instead took it to Margaret.
The court heard when Margaret later learnt that the chicken was destined for her husband's girlfriend, she became furious, slaughtered and cooked the chicken for her family.
After Revesai bought the chicken, he proceeded to the beerhall.
Upon his return, he discovered his wife had locked the door. When he asked her to open the door for him, she refused.
The court heard, Revesai took an adze and a plough bar, forced entry into the room and when his wife realised he had opened the door, she rose and confronted him as they fought for possession of the adze and plough bar.
During the commotion, Margaret overpowered Revesai, grabbed the adze and struck her husband several times on the head, thereby causing injuries which led to his death two weeks later.
Margaret is represented by Ishmael Mugwagwa and the State by Clement Chimbari.
