A MBARE man yesterday offered a bucket of maize and vegetables for the upkeep of his three children.
This came up at the Harare Civil Court where Tariro Mashingaidze was applying for US$200 maintenance from her former husband Kudakwashe Zireva.
It came to the attention of the court that the accused has not been fending for his children since October last year when he separated with the complainant
"Your worship Kuda and I went on separation sometime in July last year and since then he has never contributed even a single cent for the welfare of his children.
"I'm struggling to provide for these kids though I'm a teacher but the money is not enough to meet their expectations and necessities in life.
"I tried contacting him several times but he would find ways to bar me from knowing about his whereabouts. That's when I was advised to take legal action.
'I do hereby make a claim for US$200 so that he makes life easier for me," she said.
In response Zireva disputed Mashingaidze's claims that he was barring her access to him.
The court also heard that the respondent did not run away from his responsibility but the problem was fueled by Mashingaidze's distaste of the proposal to offer farm produce.by Zireva.
"I love my kids very much to be an irresponsible father like what Tariro is trying to desist here in court.
"The only problem is that I'm not employed or the easy way to express it is to say that I'm not educated for me to earn a formal employment.
"I make a living from farming so I told her long back that I will be able to supply you with a bucket of maize, so many vegetables and other things but she refused.
"Where does she expect me to get the money from, she ought to understand me because she loved me uneducated as I am and nothing has changed from the time we separated until now
The presiding magistrate Nyasha Marufu granted an order for Zireva to deposit US$150 every month in Mashingaidze's account.
