Harare - The Transport and Infrastructure Development ministry has proposed to slash vehicle number plates application fee by 50% within the next 100 days amid concerns to improve ease of doing business within the ministry.

This also comes at a time when government wants to eradicate corruption at the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID).

Documents seen by Khuluma Afrika which stipulate the ministry's 100 days implementation programme shows that number plates fees will be slashed by half.

"A proposal has been made to treasury to reduce the number plates fees by 50%," reads the document.

Motor vehicle users are being charged $165 for new number plates and the same amount to replace lost plates.

According to the document "The thrust of the VID in the 100 days is to unlock value to the clients and shareholder through addressing inefficiency and ineffectiveness in the value chain so as to reposition the organisation leveraging on client/customer focus towards eradicating corruption."

Among other mooted changes include .."learners license testing to involve inviting the applicant to witness the marking of the paper. The invigilator will not be the marker in order to improve transparency as well as eliminating organised networks."
