A 25-year-old man has been nabbed for allegedly stealing two cars worth US$9 430 after misrepresenting that he was hiring them.
Rifasi Simbarashe Machokoto was not asked to plead to theft of trust property charges when he appeared before Harare magistrate Tilda Mazhande.
He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court and the matter was remanded to March 27.
The State alleges that on January 19, Machokoto hatched a plan to steal Pikisai Chipwazo's car a Toyota Alteza, registration number ADM0389 and approached him purporting as if he wanted to hire it.
It was reported that Pikisai gave him the car since he knew him.
During the same day, at around 3pm, Machokoto went back to Pikisai and lied that he had found a swap and top deal with a similar car which was a recent import.
Pikisai agreed to swap the car and gave Machokoto the registration book.
It was reported that Machokoto approached Asaph Chidavaenzi, a car dealer and sold the car for US$1 500 before converting the money to his own use.
Thereafter, Machokoto shifted from where he was staying and became evasive.
Pikisai lodged a complaint with the police after failing to trace Machokoto.
On February 14, the car was recovered from Chidavaenzi who revealed that he bought it from Machokoto.
The State further alleges that sometime in January this year, Machokoto hatched a plan to steal Hazel Zidducheh's car, a Honda Fit registration number AEJ5996.
He reportedly lied to her that he wanted to hire the car and travel to Mutare but Hazel who was busy that time did not respond leading to Machokoto taking away the car without the complainant's consent.
It was reported that Machokoto sold the car to an unknown buyer and did not return home.
On March 11, Machokoto was arrested at his hideout in Marlborough after a tip off.
