TWO detectives based at Mutare Central Police Station were this week hauled before the courts on allegations of collecting bribes amounting to $220 from second hand clothes dealers.
Collen Taruvinga (32) and Adwell Mawangwa (31) on Monday appeared before Mutare magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo facing allegations of criminal abuse of duty as public officers.
The two, who are being represented by lawyer Mr Farai Matinhure, entered a plea of not guilty.
Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.
"It is alleged that from July to August 13, the accused demanded cash from seven informants so that they would not arrest them for possessing bales of second hand clothes from Mozambique.
"They were given a total amount of $220 by the informants at their residential places and left without arresting the offenders and recovering the goods. A report was made by the informants who apparently saw them in Sakubva intending to refund the money and were arrested," said Mr Karombe.
The two were granted $100 bail and will be back in the dock on September 7.
As part of their bail conditions, the two were ordered to report at CID Mutare three times a week and not interfere with State witnesses and investigations.
