The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum has on 25th of October received reports of evictions and demolitions of three hundred and thirteen (313) houses affecting approximately one thousand two hundred and fifty two (1 252) people at Glen Eagles Farm in Budiriro 5 Township on 24 October 2018.
This allegedly followed a land dispute between the City of Harare and a Housing Cooperative under the banner of Hannah Consortium who occupied the site in July 2018.
The High Court granted an eviction order on 28 August 2018 which cited eight (8) out of twelve (12) persons, but the Sheriff accompanied by the Harare City Council, moved in and demolished all the housing structures on site. This left the families homeless and children exposed to the harsh weather conditions.
In response to the arbitrary evictions, the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum) and one of its member organizations, Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) deployed researchers on a validation visit and also deployed lawyers to offer emergency legal support services to the victims' families who were not party to the court processes but were affected by the court order. This was in violation of Section 74 of the Constitution which states that "No person may be evicted from their home or have their home demolished, without an order of court made after considering all the relevant circumstances". The Forum will continue to take all necessary measures to assist the victims in safeguarding their right to shelter.
The Forum will also continue monitoring and updating you with the developments.
