A MAN has been jailed for the 2007 murder of a drinking partner for ending their booze session.
Pilani Mutsetse, 29, of Shurugwi, was incensed after Wonder Dube left their watering hole called Gakaka in the small gold mining town â€" taking with him a "Scud" which they had been drinking with a third man, White Kwenda.
Mutsetse followed Dube and beat him so badly he passed out, the Gweru High Court heard on Monday.
Kwenda â€" who had bought the two men the US$0.75 beer â€" discovered Dube's lifeless body more than an hour later as he walked home at about 8PM on November 7, 2006.
He had suffered severe head injuries and was unconscious. He was rushed to Shurugwi Hospital and later Harare Central Hospital where he battled for his life for three months, dying eventually on February 9, 2007.
Justice Maphios Cheda of the Bulawayo High Court, on circuit in Gweru, told Mutsetse as he jailed him for seven years that he had caused the death of his friend over beer that did not belong to him.
"You caused loss of human life over a trivial matter," the judge told him. "You were angry, yet you are not the one who had bought the beer in the first place. Though you are a first offender and showed remorse for your actions, you acted in an irresponsible way and you should be punished."
