MDC Alliance legislators Settlement Chikwinya (Kwekwe) and Lloyd Mukapiko (Mbizo) were last Friday granted $300 bail each by Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Martin Makonese.

Justice Makonese ordered the two to reside at their given addresses and report once a week at Kwekwe Police Station.

They were also ordered not to engage in any public demonstration or incite violence of any form while on bail.

Chikwinya and Mukapiko, who are facing charges of inciting public violence, have been in custody for more than two weeks after they were denied bail by Kwekwe magistrate Story Rushambwa.

The State alleges that Chikwinya and Mukapiko incited public violence during the fuel price hike protests that rocked the country last month.

According to the State, the actions of the two led to the blocking of roads and destruction of property in central
Kwekwe.

"We welcome the decision by the High Court because in the first place, the magistrate had misdirected himself in denying my innocent clients the bail. They did not commit the said crimes and they do not have any reason to skip trial given such weak cases against them," their lawyer, Brian Dube, said.

Posting on his Facebook wall after being released, Chikwinya said: "Greetings family. I have walked out of the walls of the walls (sic) of the house of Laban. Thank you for the support in all its forms. What doesn't kill you can only make you stronger: Psalms 124 vs7."

In a related matter, Mkoba and Chiwundura MPs, Amos Chibaya and Livingstone Chimina were remanded in custody to February 11 and 7, respectively.
