MDC Deputy National Chairperson Tendai Biti has celebrated the decision by the Constitution Court to ban corporal punishment for minor offenders.
Biti said the next move is to fight against death sentence.
Said Biti, "The decision of the Constitutional Court outlawing corporal punishment for juvenile offenders is yet another milestone in protecting people s rights. The next big fight is to outlaw capital punishment. At Biti Law Chambers we are so humbled and privileged to be part of this revolution."
Biti further added that he wishes for corporal punishment to be banned in schools and homes.
"The law is primarily an instrument of the ruling elite to protect a certain legal order. But over many years and many judgments, we have shown that the law is an instrument of change. That in brave and creative hands it can be a weapon against injustice and inequality
"The judgment only deals with convicted juvenile offenders but I am certain that it is only a question of time before corporal punishment in schools and homes is outlawed as well."
Exiled businessman Mutumwa Mawere congratulated for leading the process and fighting for human rights.
"Congratulations. Small victories go a long way towards the order sought and desired. Like Rev. Theodore Parker in 1853 said: "The Arc of the Moral Universe Is Long, But It Bends Toward Justice." The arc may not visible to the eye but it turns slowly and purposefully," Mawere said.
